Megan McClish, a Junior at West Jefferson High School and captain of the Roughriders’ girls soccer team, broke the school record for most goals scored in a season and most career goals during her 2019 soccer season. The Lady Riders played the Mechanicsburg Indians on October 8th, 2019, as McClish scored the first goal of the game to give the Riders their lead. This goal led McClish to beat the high school girl’s soccer record at West Jefferson for most goals scored in a season. On October 10, 2019, just two days after their game against Mechanicsburg, the Lady Riders played the Cristo Rey Cougars from Columbus, Ohio.

McClish sat down to recap on the moments. Listed below are the questions asked and the answers answered by the Junior team captain herself.

What was the previous record for most goals scored in a season? What was the previous record for most goals scored in a career? - “The record for most goals scored in a season was 33 and I believe the record for most goals in a career was 82.”

How many goals do you have currently for each record? - “I have 36 for most goals in a season, I think, and then 84 for the most goals scored in a career.”

How did you feel within those moments? - “It was really exciting and stuff, but it was like short-lived because you score, you gotta just jog back and you know, keep playing the game. You can’t just stop, and yeah.”

Did your team celebrate with you or did all of you do anything for you? - “No, not really. I mean, people congratulated me and stuff, but the best thing was like, my whole family was there.” She pauses to laugh a bit as she thinks back onto her games. “And they made like, little shaker bottles and my mom made a sign. And so, they were like my biggest supporters.”

Are there any other records you are able to break before you graduate? Any you are able to break in the near before this season ends? - “Not that I can think of. I mean, I’m just going to keep breaking like the career one obviously every time I score a goal but I don’t think… I don’t know if there’s any more.”

Are there any other goals you want to accomplish before you graduate? - “Um well, this year, my coach was trying to get me to state honors, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen. We’ll see. I was hoping for “Player of the Year” [for the Ohio Heritage Conference] because my points [number of goals] were a lot higher than the next person’s, but they gave it to that girl because she was a Senior.”

What state honors or accolades are you aiming for? Which ones would you like to receive? - “I already got first-team all-league and then I’m hoping to get first-team all-district. And if I can be in the top five of those people [first-team all-district], I could get state honors. Last year I was ninth, so I was close but still didn’t get it.”

With McClish as team Captain, the Lady Roughriders have a bright future continuing the rest of this soccer season and for next soccer season as well. The humbleness McClish has and hard work she puts into the game has led the Lady Riders to many of their victories this season. Nobody deserves this recognition more than she does and we congratulate her immensely on her accomplishments.
