On October 31st, 2019, 27 art students from West Jefferson High School took a field trip to a place called Otherworld. With their Art teacher, Mrs. Gravlin, and Honors English/AP Literature teacher, Mr. Diehl, the students were able to explore the building and all it had to offer. The students that went had nothing but amazing things to say about it.

What is Otherworld? According to their website, “Otherworld is a 32,000 square foot immersive art installation in Columbus. There are over 40 rooms filled with large-scale interactive art, mixed reality playgrounds and secret passageways. It’s an all-new kind of art experience where you are encouraged to freely explore and interact with a surreal world of science fiction and fantasy.” But hear it from Mrs. Gravlin first-hand in the Q and A below to get a better understanding!

Why did you decide to take a trip here? - I was very excited about a new art exhibition that featured local artists. I thought that students would appreciate the ambiance and being taken out of their everyday culture. Plus, being able to touch the work was super satisfying!

Which students did you invite and why? - I like to invite my upper-level art class students. My hope is to keep students taking art classes because they get to go on my fun and eye-opening excursions!

How would you describe your experience at Otherworld? - It was not like any art exhibit I've been to. I loved the fact that you could crawl through, touch, and play with all the art! It was an adult playground!

What was your favorite part about Otherworld? - I really enjoyed so many things. There were hidden gems everywhere, inside the rooms had little interactive sounds or pictures, places to relax or play music and secret passages. They really kept you moving and wanting to see more.

Would you recommend this place to anyone? - Yes, although for a single person to go, it's a little pricey.

Your favorite moment, or picture, from the trip? - Favorite picture was the last one in front of the tree with everyone! [The picture shown above.]
