Last Saturday, November 3rd, the West Jefferson Roughriders varsity football team faced off against the Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy Eagles. The Riders fought hard, but were ultimately defeated by the Eagles with a final score of 49-42. The Roughriders ended their season with an overall record of 8-3, and a conference record of 4-1.
The Riders had a breakout first half, with two touchdowns in the first quarter. Although the Eagles came out on top, the Riders fought hard. “We did a lot of things well, made a few mistakes, but overall it was a good experience for the kids,” said Shawn Buescher, the Varsity Football Head Coach.
Saturday was the first time in over 5 years that West Jefferson High School hosted a varsity playoff game, and the game was a big deal to the community. Coach Buescher said, “For that group of seniors and the rest of those young men to accomplish that this year, to host a home playoff game, is a big deal.”
Saturday marked the end of the season for the varsity football team. Coach Shawn Buescher said “Just being around this group of kids is what I’ll miss the most,” and “I love the game of football but that isn’t why I coach. I love being around kids.”
To the seniors, Coach Buescher said,¨We demand a lot, and to be apart of that is really unique. You have to make a lot of sacrifices. It does not go unnoticed by myself or our staff, and we greatly appreciate everything they have done for our program. Not only this year, but moving forward with the people they have been able to influence in a positive way.” The game on Saturday marked the end of a journey for senior players, but underclassmen are excited to carry on their legacy next fall.
It was an emotional night for everyone, especially the senior players. Saturday was the last time they would ever charge Kile Field as a team. High school senior Austin Swaney said that “the feeling of going out onto the field” is what he is going to miss most about West Jefferson football.
A football and cheerleading banquet will be held November 15 at 7pm in the high school auditeria.
