The Presidential election of 2020 is coming sooner than it seems, yet it is still over a year away and potential candidates are already campaigning. Some of these candidates offer a sense of hope for the the future of the United States, while others candidates fall short of inspirational.

Donald Trump, current Presidential incumbent, has all eyes on him as the 2020 election rolls around. In his past campaign, Trump made several empty promises to guarantee his spot in the Oval Office. Who’s to say he won’t use the same strategy again? Also, a president who cannot control his temper enough to not start petty battles on Twitter, is no president at all. However, Trump does have an obvious advantage as he already holds office. There is currently only one other Republican interested in challenging Trump in the primary election, but it seems like Trump has this one in the bag.

One major candidate for the Democratic party is Beto O’Rourke. Although he lost the race for Senator in Texas, he has become very popular especially to the younger age of Democrats. O’Rourke not only has a friendly and caring persona, but he has pushed for important issues such as immigration reform, rural hospital access, and the legalization of marijuana. He’s made promises, but it seems as though he truly plans to see them through.

Another Democratic party candidate to keep eyes on is Bernie Sanders. Sanders was runner-up in the Democratic primary of 2016, which gives him a pretty good chance of winning the 2020 primary, as well. Sanders pushed for Medicare for all and free college tuition. Reasonably, both of those things would take a lot of time and money to even begin to set into place in our government. So, although Bernie Sanders seems to have good intentions for the people at heart, a better fit for the Oval Office may have more realistic goals.

Senator Kamala Harris is another name to listen for in the 2020 presidential race. As both an African-American and a woman, Harris brings an edge that no other candidate would match. As Hillary Clinton lost the race last year, the title of first female president is still up for grabs. Harris is a well-presented and logical woman who would, if elected, set a great example for female youth. After 45 male presidencies, it’s about time to have a woman in charge.

The 2020 Presidential election will be one for the ages, and anything is possible. There is really no telling which way anything will go, yet. Hopefully, when the time comes, people will cast their vote for the person who can lead us gracefully into the future.
